My parents come into Boston quite often as it is a short trip from their home in Sharon. My mother loves getting back to the city (she grew up in Mattapan and on Mission Hill). While my father is not a natural city lover, the Fenway has really grown on him. Each year we make a specific plan in mid-May to line my garden with dahlias and add annuals, perennials, and vegetable plants in beds across my garden plot.
This annual ritual has been going on for well over a decade and is something to which I look forward (I think my parents really enjoy it too!). My father loves getting breakfast on Restaurant Row at Thornton’s (his favorite). Afterward we head to the garden for a few hours of plant placement and a little redesign. Our secret to a successful season is sprinkling chicken poop on all the beds – you heard it here first!
